Buying Guide – How to Choose the Best Large Format Plotter Printer 2

Selecting the right large format plotter printer 2 requires understanding your specific needs regarding media width and speed. This guide breaks down key factors to consider for your workspace.

Media Width and Size

Most professional plotters support rolls up to 24 inches but wider options like 36 inches exist for larger maps. Ensure the printer supports the specific sheet and roll sizes you use regularly.

Choosing the correct width prevents wasted space or the need for oversized equipment if standard sizes suffice.

Print Speed

Speed varies significantly between models ranging from 59 to 120 A1 prints per hour. Faster models are essential for high-volume environments where time is money.

Evaluate your typical daily volume to determine if a faster printer justifies the higher cost.

Memory and Processing

Larger memory buffers like 1GB help process complex CAD files without delays. This is crucial for intricate technical drawings that require significant data handling.

Ensure the memory capacity matches the complexity of the files you typically print to avoid bottlenecks.

Media Handling

Automatic feeders and cutters significantly reduce manual labor and downtime. Look for models that support both roll and sheet feeding without manual swaps.

Efficient media handling keeps your workflow smooth and minimizes interruptions during busy periods.

Connectivity Options

Modern printers should offer USB Ethernet and Wi-Fi for flexible network integration. Wireless support enables printing from multiple devices and remote management apps.

Verify connectivity options match your current office network setup for seamless integration.

Ink and Maintenance Costs

Maintenance costs vary widely with some models using significantly less ink for routine maintenance. Check cartridge costs and expected yield per cartridge to estimate long-term spending.

Low maintenance ink usage can save substantial money over the life of the printer.

Warranty and Support

Standard warranties are often one year but options for extended onsite support are available. Onsite service reduces downtime which is critical for business continuity.

Investing in extended warranty support can protect your business from unexpected repair costs and delays.

Software and Features

Features like HP Click software simplify printing by integrating directly with CAD applications. Some models also offer scanning or cloud printing capabilities for added versatility.

Choose software features that align with your workflow to maximize efficiency and ease of use.

How to Use and Care for Your Large Format Plotter Printer 2

Always load media rolls securely to prevent shifting during printing which can cause misalignments. Use the automatic cutter settings to ensure clean cuts for every job.

Perform regular maintenance cleaning cycles using the software tools to keep the printheads clear of clogs. This ensures consistent print quality and extends the life of the hardware.

Store unused ink cartridges in a cool dry place to maintain their chemical integrity. Follow manufacturer guidelines for replacing cartridges to avoid potential damage to the printhead.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the typical lifespan of a large format plotter printer?

Most professional models last around five to seven years with regular maintenance and moderate daily use. The lifespan depends heavily on print volume and how well you follow maintenance schedules like cleaning printheads.

Do I need special software to use these printers?

No specialized software is required as these printers work with standard Windows and Mac drivers. However, software like HP Click can simplify workflows by integrating directly with CAD applications.

How do I handle sheet and roll paper changes?

Many modern models have automatic sheet and roll switches to minimize manual intervention. If your model lacks this you will need to manually swap the source when switching between paper types.

What is the maximum width for these printers?

While most models in this list support 24 inches, wider options like the T850 support up to 36 inches. Choose the width based on your largest standard drawing or poster size.

Can I print from a mobile device?

Yes, most models offer Wi-Fi connectivity and mobile apps like HP Smart. This allows you to print directly from your smartphone or tablet without a direct cable connection.

Is an onsite warranty worth the extra cost?

For business users downtime can be costly so an onsite warranty is often a valuable investment. It ensures that any hardware issues are resolved quickly without shipping delays.

How do I manage ink costs effectively?

Look for models that use less ink for routine maintenance as this saves money over time. Also, consider the cost per page of the cartridges rather than just the upfront cartridge price.

Are these printers suitable for fine art printing?

Yes, models like the Canon PRO 2100 are optimized for fine art with pigment inks. However standard CAD printers are more focused on precision lines than color fidelity.
